Great Plant Picks is an educational awards program committed to building a comprehensive palette of outstanding plants for Pacific Northwest gardens. Awards are based on the combined expertise of over forty horticulturists from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. Great Plant Picks originates at the Elisabeth Carey Miller Botanical Garden in Seattle, Washington, and provides a forum for sharing horticultural information with the wider gardening community.
The Great Plant Picks selection committee meets three times yearly. At selection committee meetings, plants are nominated, debated, affirmed or rejected; information about award-winning plants is recorded. All committee members volunteer their time to Great Plant Picks; they are drawn from a range of sectors—botanical gardens, garden centers, wholesale nurseries and garden design firms.
The Great Plant Picks Selection Committee also depends on the advice of experts in advisory groups, which meet yearly or more to recommend selections in their field of expertise. Presently there are three advisory groups, one for ferns, one for rhododendrons and one for roses.
