Abelia × grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’ PBR

gold-variegated abelia

Outstanding Qualities

The foliage of this almost whimsical abelia is transformed by a kaleidoscope of colors over the course of spring, summer, & fall. In early spring the leaves unfold with a bright yellow edge and light green center and then mature to a variegation of darker green and golden to creamy yellow. As autumn progresses splashes of red, orange, golden yellow, and green take center stage. A profusion of lightly scented white flowers attract bees & butterflies from summer through fall.

Colors & Combos

Great Color Contrasts: blue, burgundy, purple

Great Color Partners: red, yellow

Culture Notes

Plant in full sun for the greatest effect on the foliage, but it will tolerate light shade. For the best growth plant this shrub in a rich soil, although it will do fine in clay or sandy soils as long as they are well-drained. Water occasionally - every 10 to 14 days during dry periods or regularly - once per week - for more lush growth. While generally a compact plant, if an occasional water-sprout pops up, it may be pruned to keep a neater appearance.
