Dainty, sunshine yellow flowers with red tepals in springtime on elongated stems. The evergreen foliage has spiny leaf edges and may be tinged red when it first emerges. A lovely species from the wilds of China.

Culture NotesGrows best in rich, well-drained soil in light to open shade; morning sun and afternoon shade is excellent. May bloom fine in dappled shade as well. Water regularly – at least once a week – or more frequently for lush, robust plants. This species has evergreen foliage which typically looks good through the winter; however, for ease of maintenance cut the leaf stems to the ground in late winter or early spring before the flowering stems begin to emerge.
