Plant in average soil that is not overly rich; they will tolerate clay and sandy soils as long as they are well-drained soil. Water occasionally to keep the appearance at its best or, once established this perennial is drought tolerant. Flowers that have finished blooming can be cut back to encourage further blooms. Cut back the stems in late winter to the base leaves for a fresh start to spring.
